Workshop Goals

This workshop will focus on optimizing ground-based spectroscopic observations of asteroids in support of ESA's Gaia mission, by gathering active researchers from around the world. Our primary aim is to develop a coordinated program of asteroid spectroscopy complementary to Gaia's observations.

Venue

The workshop will be held at "La maison du Séminaire" hotel in Nice, France, on June 6 & 7, 2013, and hosted by the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur. This workshop is sponsored by the European Science Foundation's GREAT program, the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur and the University of Central Florida. Preliminary Program

Day 1

• Introduction
  • The Gaia mission
  • Expectations from Gaia data of asteroids
  • Overview of other relevant surveys and missions, such as:
    • Herschel, WISE, Pan-STARRS, Spitzer, Akari, etc.
• The evolving status of asteroid science
  • Knowledge of asteroid physical properties
    • For example, spectra, colors, spin, shapes, surface and internal structure
  • Implications of asteroid science to other areas of Solar System research, such as:
    • Constraints on origin of Earth and Solar System
    • Migration of giant planets, etc.
• Developing a coordinated program of ground-based asteroid spectroscopy which will include:
  • Prioritized target list
  • Preferred wavelength ranges and resolutions;
  • Alerts from Gaia observations of important targets;
  • Other complementary observations of Gaia targets such as, photometry, astrometry, radiometry

Day 2

• Available ground-based facilities and other resources
  • Telescopes and instrumentation
  • Complementary datasets
  • Existing and potential collaborations
• Toward a big picture: Complementary use of data from different sources
  • WISE; SDSS; laboratory spectra of meteorites and minerals, etc.
• Gaia Observations relevant to asteroid space missions, such as:
  • Marco-Polo-R, Hayabusa-2, and OSIRIS-Rex
• Round table
  • Feedback on the proposed observing campaign
  • Future activities of the related GREAT workgroup
  • Identified tasks
  • Future initiatives

Important Deadlines and Contact Information

2. If you have not preregistered by January 31, 2013, there will be a registration fee, which you can pay online.
3. The abstract submission deadline is also January 31, 2013. Abstracts must be no more than 300 words, must not contain figures, and must be in ASCII/text format. Please e-mail abstracts to gaia.asteroidsgmail.com.
4. The meeting program will be available in late March or early April 2013.
