Instructions to Build a Grill

Materials:
- A steel sheet (approx 40x90 cm, 16x35 in).
- 4 (3/8 in. approx.) nuts and bolts.

Tools:
- A hammer.
- A Screwdriver.
- Tin snips (see below for alternative).

Pre-preparation:
- As for the steel sheet, you can get one from Home Depot for $7. This one even has a reinforced side that will make your grill more stable.

- If you dont have tin snips to cut the sheet (as in my case), you can use a swiss knife and a metal ruler (or any straight, hard-enough material) instead.

Preparation:
First of all, be careful of the sharp edges.
Divide the sheet along the long axis in three parts that will make the main body, and the sides. I used sections of 49, 20, and 20 cm, respectively (make sure to keep the reinforced side in the main piece). Use the snips to cut it. If you are using a knife, use the ruler to guide the knife along the cutting line. Once you have carved through about 1/3 to 1/2 of the sheet thickness, bend over the sheet along the cutting line to break the sheet along the line.

You should have now three pieces, one of 49x40 cm (main body) and two 20x40 cm (sides). Next, you have to bend the sides to make the grill 'legs'. Divide the sides in three sections along the long axis, I used sections of 7.5, 26, and 7.5 cm wide each. Make a clean, as-sharp-as-possible 90° bend. I used my desk drawer to make the bends:

Now you need to make the holes to joint the sides to the main body. The idea is to hold the main body, bent in a 'u' shape. For the side sections, made the holes 1 cm away from the corners (see fig above). For the main section, along the short axis, make the holes 6.5 cm away from the edges and 1 cm away into the sheet (see below). To drill the holes I used a hammer and a screwdriver. Make sure that the bolts pass through the holes.

Now you should have all the elements ready to start assembling the grill:

Start by joining one side of the grill with the nuts and bolts. Then, bent the main piece, and hold it together while you join the other side with the bolts. Alternatively, you can simply fit the other side legs into the reinforced bent of the main body:

And voila!, there is your new grill. As for the grate, I looked for a piece of fence at Home Depot, but couldn't find any suitable/affordable one there. In any case, any good friend surely could always lend you a grate.
