To make up the Quiz, do the following:

  • on your honor, take the quiz on paper and write down your solultion for this quiz taking no more than 30 minuters
  • Make sure your name, the date, your table, and Quiz 3 are marked at the top right of your paper
  • Put the solution in an envelope addressed to me with your name on it
  • Hand the solution to me before the start of class on Monday

Note: Students who took the quiz in class received an additional 2 points of extra credit. A solution to problem 2 that includes a correct motion diagram and a correct pictorial model will receive an additional bonus of 3 points


1. Starting from home, you bicycle 50 km north in 4 h, then turn around
and pedal straight home in 2.0 h.

(a) What is your displacement at the end of the first 2.2 h?
(b) What is your average velocity over the first 2.2 h?
(c) What is your average velocity for the homeward leg of the trip?
(d) What is your displacement for the entire trip?
(e) What is your average velocity for the entire trip?


2. From an old test: (Use the GOAL protocol to solve this problem) In the "Race Across America," bicycle racers start riding in Los Angeles and the first one to reach the finish line in New York wins. How long (from start to finish) would it take you to ride from LA to New York? What would your average speed be? (To receive full credit, you will need to show the reasoning behind your estimations.)
