Announcements

  • Test Scores w/bonus and Grades to date (incomplete) will be posted later today on WebAssign
Grades will be updated throughout the week
  • People have been reporting discrepancies with the attendance grades - please contact me outside of class if your attendance grade does not reflect your attendance. Make sure you include when you registered for this class and when you have been out on excused absences.
  • Friday is the last day to withdraw from classes w/o penalty. If you withdraw from this class, remember that you have to withdraw from both the lecture and lab courses separately.
  • We decided to that only the top 80% of your WebAssign written solution scores would count towards your course grade.
  • I will also allow you to drop your 2 lowest quiz scores.
  • GOAL solutions will be posted later today
  • I have decided that although it is important to make sure you have a good set of notes, I am not going to collect them. It is your responsibility to take good notes.
  • Test 2 is one week from Friday
Test 2 notes will be posted Friday

Assignments

  • Due Today
Read HRW text Chapter 25: Sections 1-5
    WebAssign: Feb 24 HW
    HW Handout-Gauss' Law

  • Due Wednesday
    WebAssign: Week 7 Journal
    Group Contracts
Assigned Problem from class: Use Gauss' Law to find the E-field inside a uniformly charged cylinder of radius R = 0.30 m with charge density 2.5e-6 C per m cubed at a distance r from the center of the cylinder (r < R). Graph the E-field as a function of r from r = 0 + epsilon (where epsilon is very small) to the limit as r => infinity. Hint: use your notes from the Gauss Law and cylinder problem below.

  • Due Friday
    WebAssign: Feb 28 HW

Activities

  • Gauss' Law Tutorial-handout
    • Gauss' law summary
    • Using Gauss' Law to find th E-field from a charge sheet
    • E-field from two charged sheets
  • Gauss' Law and a cylinder
  • Charged Spheres*
